Skills development/evaluation
The general nature of the advertisement world is to force people into purchasing their product whether they want it or not. A successful marketing campaign will target their audience and embed within their minds a need to purchase their product (or, have ever thought to agree with the message). This aim highlighted to me the importance of having researched the disciplinary market your product is aimed at and emphasised the importance of comprehensively understanding your target audience.
Soaps attract a broad audience and within this broad audience there are smaller audience groups. I felt it was compulsory for me to conduct extensive market research. I had arranged a focus group meeting, within the location we chose to film, with staff members we hoped to replicate. I had done this independently from the group, i believe this highlights my improved abilities of planning and research. Consequently, the focus group had us re plan our entire trailer due in invaluable information that was fed back and so we accepted that the focus group was a tremendous success. Not only had we re planned our trailer but the theory we based our soap on had changed. The characters that were to feature (hypothetically) in our soap were exaggerated stereotypes that subtracted from the realism. After having evaluate the response from our focus group members we accepted what they had to say with open minds and agreed to transform our characters into more refined archetypical characters.
Once all the research needed had been acquired we began grasping the difficulty of creatively solving the problem at hand. Fundamentally, what generates success through marketing strategies and advertisements is the ability to think of new and innovative techniques/methods of attracting and sustaining an audience. I therefore believe my ability to think creatively (outside-the-box) has improved.
We'd begin group discussions after we had researched conventions of media texts to discuss whether we'd like to adopt them or develop them. I believe the most innovative idea we've had was to transform the traditional communal location featured within a soap, which most often revolved around a minuscule geography location, and develop this in a working environment which can feature story lines that transport audience away from the offices and into their homes. We hoped this will give an extra dimension to our soap and generating a new genre of TV that converges the conventions of Drama and Soaps to offer something new.
Our initial intention was to have something that showed greater diversity in the representation of characters, which is a vague objective although we concentrated this to social class, gender and religion. We also wanted to include current affairs and communicate some kind of political message for a more intellectual audience. My having an office environment it can show employees in different levels of the organisation that will have different salaries, and therefore having different lifestyles/class. The boss is a female Muslim which in itself fights off any preconceived assumptions that women are not dominant in the working environment, brings awareness to sexist issues that are forever being disputed, highlights the awareness of the Muslim faith and the current affairs that are currently being highlighted in other media forms. Here we are sending out a strong message through one character that can reach out to many people due to the characters broad characteristics. We have two strong features to this character and this can be interpreted by two main groups of people; females that are career orientated and people of the Muslim faith that wish to see someone practicing their faith without having explosives tied around their waist. We're highlighting these two concerns and sending out a political message which may also interest some one of a political nature.
Our communal area based in the offices of a company dealing in the fashion trade. Someone who is interested in business can also be attracted to this. We have creatively thought of a way to communicate an impression that this business exists amongst our viewers as this will generate a more loyal fan base (seen by Eastenders, actors have been harassed in the street by fanatics), the idea is to feature on the website a business profile. This business profile would appear to converge with a business website, which would subsequently reject the conventions of a colour contrasting, 'over-loaded', traditional soap website and contain statistical information of the businesses finances through this economic climate and inform viewers of other corporate information to give our soap a real identity.
I believe it's crucial to have an understanding with technological advancements. Using the website to target all the new-age 'surfers' is crucial in generating a fan base. You must generate features that are seen to be addictive, or habit forming, to attract users to continue visiting the site. Due to the development of TV it's hard for shows to generate high viewings due the amount of TV channels that can cater for very narrow audiences. The same applies to websites, if not more so as the number of sites is mammoth, so in theory, to generate those large numbers you must have that 'hook'. I believe this business profile highlights our creative and innovative thoughts as amongst the research we have conducted there has been no evidence that this has been thought of before.
Also our awareness of technological advancements is predominantly because our generation has been introduced to mobile devices from a young age. Today mobile devices are not a luxury, but a necessity to life. Everyone has a mobile, people are able to be contacted at any time, at almost any place and about anything. Another way to tackle this problem of locating this broad audience is to add a text marketing strategy. This basically means people can register to receive up to date information about the soap, off the hours of broadcasting to create a further dimension to our soap (to add to the impression that it exists in reality). This feature can be diverse and can be sent from characters, general updates as though from a narrator or can be from producers themselves asking for feedback such as whether the company should accept this new business deal. This text strategy is becomingly increasingly popular although it has not been done with soaps. We are expanding our creative thought and incorporating the use of technological consumables in alternative ways to market our project.
Our project is a convergence of main disciplinaries and a development in soap opera's. We have established a foundation for this soap to be a replica of the ever changing, realistic setting of London suburbia. Originally we were predominantly inspired by Eastenders as we felt we related to this more so than the stylised Hollyoaks. We have introduced a new edge that's innovative and fits in perfectly with the current state of the nation that can appeal not only to the rich but the poor, not only to the young but the old, not only to the business men but the business women, and not only the intellectuals but the dim witted.

Eastenders Xmas trailer.
- The trailer begins very merry. The colour and contrast begin changing to represent the sinister ending. The first half is juxtaposed with the second half which truly reflects the nature of a soap: mundane realism conflicting with absurd dramatic story lines. By juxtaposing visual features such as colour and behaviour from characters from joyful to a darker mood creates tension and emphasises the epic style Eastenders will encapsulate for the Christmas special.
The techniques stated above are ones we hope to adopt and adapt into our trailer. We hoped to juxtapose the speed of the shots like stated below. We're relying on our post-production equipment (software) to modified speeds, if the software doesn't feature the tools we need then we'll be prohibited from doing so.
"Hello"
Employee 2 - confused
"So hows everyone working downstairs"
lights cigarette
drinks coffee
Employe 3 -nervous
*nodding* "It's a hard time now"
lights cigarette
drinks coffee

"I wanted to let you know"

Employee 4 - worried
"These are the expected figures" -- The speech begins slowing down (1/2 point)

"We can't afford to go the way we're going"

Employee 5 - crying
"I'm going to have to let you go"

Zooms out to Boss sitting in the chair completly exhausted
Verve House appears center stage as if being typed.
.End.
The Xmas specials always have overwhelming festive iconography. The focus of this trailer is on family dinners/gatherings. This is a strong indicator to audiences that it may be Xmas, the majority of viewers can relate and respond positively.
- Reflecting upon our own trailer, it seems a vast majority can identify with the situation to certain degrees, yet i don't believe they'll respond positively. A few months back when conducting our market research people responded positively to our ideas although it may be inappropriate for this holiday.
- The Christmas season already generates a lot of excitement in people and is a time when people would speak to friends and family more than normal. By reminding people of this season not much else has to be done to engage with audiences. The trailer shows people sitting, kissing, laughing, showing photo albums and general happy moments that may occur during the season. The gossip element is enhanced due to this time of year where families are discussing what each other are doing and this attitude is reflected onto the program. Audiences may wonder, what are the families in Eastenders going to be up to on Christmas? They would already expect to witness some dramatic occurrence and would begin gossiping; not only to their usual fellow 'gossipers' but to their extend families (chances are, the extended family has some knowledge of the Eastenders storyline). This could be a reason why the Christmas special has more ratings that most other shows during the year.

Txt Marketing Strategies
- viewers texting in requesting 'storyline spoilers'
- images of the next episode to try guess or, peice together the storyline
- Download games/theme tunes onto their phone
- Enter exclusive competitions
- Create an Eastenders instant messenger chat so fans can discuss topics live
I've had a look onto the most popular soap sites and none are adopting any of the techniques above. I believe these is at the forefront of being interactive and now days people demand more. This seems more personal to the user as it's in their pocket, the fan may become more loyal and being sending the product (what ever this may be) to their contacts via e-mail or other social networking sites.
Future predictions state that internet access is to be more widey available than ever before reaching remote regions of the nation. It seems that this is a huge way of reaching out potential audiences and other technological advancements as this is up-and-coming, innovative and NEW!
This is definatly something to think about when designing a website layout and can be mentioned on a poster design. If this idea is accepted amoungst the group it can be adopted into all anxilary texts we're to produce.

Filming session - Review.
I was rather dissapointed as we had only managed to complete 6 shots. The outcome of these shots were very adequate and we all felt we we're moving in the right direction. The filming is postpond for 2 weeks due to personal circumstances amongst the group. The filming will commence one th 12th or 13th of December.

'Corrie' website research.

The 'Corrie' website is a sub-page to ITV's main site. The 'footer' (above) has a concurrent theme of old street signs. It's very common for websites to have common themes to make it easier for the user to navigate through the site. It's therefore essential for the hyperlinks to different pages to be clearly displayed.

The main page has a central item which is the video (above) which is not a trailer but a small catch up clip that highlights the weeks main storylines. This is a technique used to entertain viewers and to instantly remind them of the drama that's occuring.
The pink font shots that there's a subtle similarity across the site that is not disorientate viewers too much. The links below are also hyperlinks that open up a gallery of other videos that viewers have a choice of watching.
It seems we may need to film a video exclusive as this is used as a marketing tool to allow audiences to begin speculating about future storylines. For a new soap it's vital to allow audiences to begin gossiping about the program to advance a viral marketing strategy.

Storyboard, Risk Assesment, Pitch and Recce Form
Office, Recession, North London, Business, Money, Glamorous, Trampy, Fashion and Competition.
Final idea.
We had several offices to choose from as employees are not in during the weekend. We'd decided upon two offices as one office had a liability of being locked. We had already arranged consent for us to film on the above dates (this was confirmed during our focus group discussion).
We chose these offices as they appeared to be larger and much more elegant then others. There were offices which had very litte furniture, others were too messy and some were over crowded with furniture. These offices did not fit our criteria.
The office we chose had a glass wall that sectioned another office. Initially we thought this was a concern as it may reflect us filming and distract viewers. When finalising our storyboard plan we realised most of our shots will be media to close up shots heavily focusing on the desk.
The office was of a generous size and would easily accomodate the four of us. We are also advantagous due to the closure of the offices on the days we chose to film. This allows us complete freedom (within limitations) inside the building.
The offices are impressive, they do not compare with the offices shown in the program The Office. The group and myself were very happy to confirm this as our set.
Focus Group Evaluation.
- They thought the fact that there were two gay people in our top 6 characters was excessive as they said that gays are a minority. Even working in a fashion retail business not many would be seen as it's still a regular business. They said it takes away from the realism.
- The P.A was said to be suicidal, considering he had a wife and children, he was secretly gay, he's had a major pay cut, work has an uncertain enviroment, he's had to descale all he's property (car, house). We'll take this into consider as maybe too much is going on for this "poor bloke".
- From one of the gentlemen he mentioned that the new girl should be a tart and failed to see what our intention was. Maybe we'll chose to keep her gay.
- An interesting storyline idea another gentlemen mentioned was that maye the boss can be having an affair with an employee. The time comes when Aya has to 'sack' her lover and he can then turn round and blackmail her. "No you can't. I'll tell your husband and everyone at work about us!"
- They informed us that people bitch/gossip a lot. For example they told us that when an employee takes a holiday and another member of staff takes their position for the week they begin undermining there position. "Stupid cow. I can't believe they pay her this much, i can do a much better job". This shows it's a perfect location to include the huge factor of gossip to intise audiences.
- They said that the boss would never present employees with balance sheets. This is a very secretive affair between the boss and the accountant. They said it's more likely that an accountant would present it to the boss either on a computer screen or written document.
-They affirmed our idea that discrimination doesn't exist in their working environment. They stated that they do a lot of business with people of a Jewish and Muslim faith. Evidence of this is that the two bosses are Greek and Jewish.
- We got told that; when people were told about the upcoming job losses everyone was gathered into a large room. Grown men were seen to be crying. It was said that there was a great uncertainty, fear, anticipation, worry and generally very depressing. Whilst employees were explaining this to us the mood in the room suddenly droped as you can still tell it was still strongly affecting them.
-The people that were left claimed to be much closer and more as a family.
- Due to the huge competitiveness they have to do 5 times the amount of work, and provide much more products than the single garment. And, their pay as decreased.
-This happened just before christmas so maybe we could feature this as our chrismas special.
- They proposed we should definatly show how it has affected people at home as, basing it in an office alone is too narrow and niche.
- They proposed we should show it from the bosses point of view as when he told employees individually he went through it ten fold compared to employees. They all agreed it was more 'soul destroying' for the bosses than anyone else.
-For the website perhaps we can show clips of characters reactions or have an interview special to make it more exclusive and interactive for audiences. This will also help establish realism and make the characters and soap more believable. It would also spark of viral marketing and increase the gossip factor.

Eastenders website research.
The title is of the trademark font with the infamous 'queen vic' in the background. We may choose to illustrate our generic font style (our house style) and feature the warehouse in the background to enforce some strong iconography. We're assuming the theory 'the bigger the bolder' something is the bigger impact or impression it will cast on viewers.
This poll is a very good idea as it directs the user instantly and provides good feedback that's easy to comprehend. Although i would criticise it's vagueness, does it mean the Eastenders production team or the community of Eastenders.
The votes that are posted on the BBC website (for Eastenders) change daily to accommodate the every changing story lines. Maybe we can develop this idea and have daily votes on business affairs or comment on whether the business we're representing will gain a new business deal that's potentially on offer. We'll drift from the central idea on the characters and integrate viewers in a more interactive sense with being involved in the business procedures. This will be a way for viewers to relate and to gossip on the programme.E.g. Is verve going to accept this new deal with the local high street retailer and gain £60,000?
E.g. 2 To maximise profits should Verve a. invest in the new lorries b. hire a new accountant c. fire staff that fail to enable efficient working procedures.

Eastenders trailer
In this trailer we see a very popular editing effect: the fade. This is done to show that the scene is not concurrent. As you can, it highlights one main storyline that's very dramatic and shows highly emotion shots from the programme. It's presented in the epic form as it has close ups of characters crying, violence and it has echoed voice overs which adds to the dramatic essence.
The storyline is very easily established, this trailer presents the narrative through dialogue whereas the coronation street trailer focuses more on visuals (iconography) to communicate.
Our main narrative will be very ambiguous hoping to be enigmatic and cause audience's to gossip around this. We'll focus more on the business's down turn due to the economic climate. We'll follow the conventions of a faced trailer like this one, as it helps build tension and cause adrenaline in the viewer.
This trailer shows snapshots of one particular storyline and focuses around very few characters. What we must consider is that Eastenders is a very long and well established programme and so, viewers are familiar with characteristics and current dynamics. For our opening we'd like to focus on our main characters such as the new girl, the boss and her PA.
What i particularly liked was the choice of dialogue, very strong and effective phrases that communicate powerful and meaningful messages. An idea we could have after we present the strong iconographic images of bank statements and graphs is, to have the boss light a cigarette and so "so what now?". We should decide what her tempermet will be like and what can be most effective. I would suggest a more subtle approach, which strays from the typical conventions of trailers, yet i believe to hold that essense of realism and mystery it will work very effectively.

Coronation Street trailer.
A popular style of trailers takes on an epic form in the sense that everything is over the top and over sensualised. Here we see the fairy tale wedding, it's very strong in iconography and posses many traditional features which can relate to a majority of people. The elaborate cake with the bride and groom displayed ontop, the silver service and the chapaign.
The gossip factor is elevated as a wedding celebration/ceremony is a huge occurence and maybe people will question who will arrive, what gifts they will bring, who may not arrive and as a soap viewer you will begin suspecting what could possibly happen that can destroy the day.
The scene is juxtaposed with the fairy tale idea and the realism of the situation. This can hold some ironic and satirical elements for example: the bouquet of flowers traditional decorating a 'classy' car, yet you zoom out to see an old ford escort being spray painted "just married!". How classy?
The phrase "good luck" is over emphasised in the scene which can be interpreted as quite sarcastic given the circumstances for example; the bride having to have a drink in the morning and the groom not looking to enthralled. This works as an enigmatic opening as audiences question what could possibly go wrong.
The music is enthusiastic and the shots are rather fast paced. I think this is something we would have to consider if we're going to represent a large storyline. Everything in this trailer is clearly displayed through the use of strong iconic props that are easily understood by viewers. I would also like to include satirical elements so it's more entertaining rather than gritty realism. The idea of juxtaposing positives with negatives works very well as it can highlight the dramatics, which entertain, and the realism, which draws viewers in.
Sunday, 25 October 2009
When we visited the location we began brainstorming some potential poster ideas. Walking in through the glass doors you see the name of the company in silver letters above the reception desk. I took this picture as a basic draft, we thought we could have Aya/the boss standing from the balcony looking down at the character in a stance that shows power and control.
By having Aya central to the screen above the title of the programme it follows a simplistic layout form which is a common convention from other posters we've seen. It shows a clear message of status, it can relate to many people has statistics say over half of employees feel intimidated or are bullied by their employer. Overall it has a striking effect, i think there's a concurrent colour theme. We could developing the framing better and digitally edit the colours.
Things for us to think about would be what slogans, if any, would we want to feature and where to position it.

More Poster Research.
The popular teenage drama Skins has a very clear image it's trying to sell which is common amongst programmes today, sex. It's similar to that of Hollyoaks in the sense that is an attractive cast and emphasises sexual relations. This was a controversial poster and was said to be banned. We won't follow this style as i think it's degrading to the show and narrows your market. Although it does follow the convention of featuring the main character and highlight a central storyline. It's quite enigmatic as it doesn't reveal a storyline as such but strongly conveys a lifestyle and therefore communicating it's narrative image successfully. It's an abstract image which conveys to viewers that the programme itself is not based on representing strong realism. The environment portrayed is of course not realistic and again you see an all white cast.
This is another poster from the popular programme Top Gear. It's just as stylised as before and conveys a strong narrative image. It seems both these posters featuring one or two characters have very simplistic layouts which can be easily interpreted and visually very striking. This character is completely covered in a racing uniform as the viewer you instantly recognise this is a car show of some sort. Nothing more is really revealed to the audience so it causes audiences to wonder what else is featured. This is one way of drawing in an audience and can be successful in generating new viewers rather than maintaining audience viewings. As this programme is one of the most popular programmes on TV today there's no need to publicise it's broadcasting details.
This is the second generic form of TV posters. It's more complex visually as it features all main characters in the layout. This gives you a more detail representation of relationship dynamics between characters and gives you a more accurate representation of the programme itself. I think it would fail to attract a mass audience as i believe too much is being revealed. The poster is much more imaginative as it fights very well with their supernatural story lines. It has no real relevance to the style of which we're looking at although we may consider creating a poster that features all cast members.
This is another supernatural programme that has a more visually complex layout. The problem with featuring specialist is graphics is, 'a', we don't acquire the knowledge or specialist equipment to construct and, 'b', it strongly resembles a film poster. To some extent you can mention the simplistic poster can also resemble a film poster although i would deny this as it's not projected with a strong narrative image and leaves more for your persona response and imagination. Whereas having a poster such as this creates a more accurate image for the viewer leaving less for personal response. This can be negative attribute when the intention is to appeal to a large diverse group of people.I conclude this research with the fact that we may as a group lean towards a more simplistic poster featuring one or two characters with strong symbolic meaning.

Poster Research

This is a Hollyoaks advertisement, it was the only soap poster i could find. It's more common to find drama posters or film posters. We thought we'd much prefer to do a poster as we believe it will have more impact and allows more individuality with design as you don't have to comply with house styles.
This poster is reminiscent of tv listings magazine due to it's colour scheme, it's very bold, intense and they clash (there's no mood/theme being put across). They used generical bold fonts all varying from each other and they also have borders surrounding.
The layout is similar to that of a film poster in the sense that it's extreme stylised, the characters have a lot of sex appeal, there's a title and an ambigous/enigmatic slogan and there's also a review at the top.
The narrative image is one that would appeal to a young mind as i don't believe there's much depth. All the colours are bold and only signify a happy ignorence. The slogan playing with fire is not exactly the most warming phrases yet the smiling faces and commercial clothing is sending of contradicting messages.
The two main characters revolving around this particular storyline is common to a poster. It's highlighting the focus, which revolves around these two characters. It does nothing to win over new viewers but instead it's used as a reminder to existing fans with knowledge of the program of storyline occuring now or in the near future. The image present and the general style does nothing to inform viewers of locations or circumstances. I believe it gives a very unclear image of the narrative structure forming a poor narrative image that fails to attract me to watch it. It fials to communicate any reason to watch it as there's no enigma's, not drama, no excitment, no realism, no real storyline.
I doubt will adopt this particular style but we may chose to use bold colours. We may also choose to not feature all the main characters inthe soap but concentrate on only one.
Group meeting/Brainstorming session/location visit/refined ideas.
IDEAS:
-Serhan playing Peter can have chipped nail polish on his nails, only very slightly to convey an enigmatic narrative to viewers. It could mean his young daughter wanted to paint one or it could be his cheeky secret that he may like to paint his own nails as apart of his secret (he's gay and hiding).
- To link all the characters together and symbolic show that they all have an important role within the business we've thought to have a folder/documents passed round to all characters. We may begin a shot with a close up of Peter/serhans hands flicking through a filing cabinet to look for these important documents for their weekly board meeting. This will establish the setting for the audience.
- Another opening idea was that the new girl can arrive through the doors at reception, this will reflect the audience stepping into this new territory. The reception is one of the more glamorous areas and this can give a contradicting message, although the audience would only find out the business is not all it appears once they've entered. This can be be enigmatic and attractive to some viewers.
-Yet another opening idea could be Aya sitting upon her throne although her back is turned away from the camera and you only see this grand office chair. The chair can then turn still concealing her identity. You'll then see Aya's shoes/heels walking down the long corridor towards the confrence room. She'll then enter late as all other employee's are waiting patiently for the bosses arrival.
- We could have everyone gossiping in the meeting room before Aya comes in as we're aware gossip is a huge element to soaps, althought for a trailer we must highlight a dramatic storyline to capture the audiences interest.
- We're exciting about all the potential opening scenes and could feature all of them. Once Serhan finds the documents he could then beginning handing them round to all staff members around the table. This will allow us to film each character and highlight there main characteristics. Aya could eventually enter late being the last one to read the document. She can then reveal these secrete work documents. She can take them out and it large font the name of our soap either Verve House or Southbury Rd can be shown as well as negative bank statements. The camera can zoom out intoconvention soap form and there present upon the table newspapers feturing headlines about the recession or specific business failure.
- Be presenting all the characters at the table we're hoping audience's can find atleast one that they're intrigued by eg; the good looking sexy man, they may begin speculating he'll have an affair with Aslihan as we may chose to show them to staring at each other. But on Aslihan's arrival we can show her 'giving-the-eye' to the female receptionist, this will be one storyline we'll breifly introduce viewers with and it may be enough to want to make viewers tune in.
-As Aslihan walks into the building the tramp can be sitting just outside the main entrance or can be hiding in the car park. This may be enough to make viewers question why there's a tramp there. We could represent him to be rather shifty and intimidating, or generally dirty and degrading to the image of the business. However we chose to repsent this character, viewers make be rather shocked and would be interested to find out why he's there, weather he's allowed or maybe wondering if further action will be taken to remove him etc.
-When Serhans rustling through the files before the meeting he can comment on the nail polish, this again will hopefully cause questioning from viewers.
...Enigmatic storylines are a key convention to soaps and to trailers of all kinds and are focus at the moment is to present enough vague stories to appeal to a large audience without diverting from the realism of the situations. Enigma's are key to attracting viewers to tune in, when filming a trialer it doesn't neccesserily represent the style of how the soap would normally be represented. This trailer we're planning, in terms of filming style and general narrative structure, is an exception to the normal conventions of soaps. If we were to film a scene from our soap then we would follow the tradionaly structures such as avoiding the close ups/abstrast representations and heavy symbolism.

Researching Characters. Taken from forums.
Peggy Mitchell - Landlord of The Queen Vic, shows her businesses mind brain which is a rare thing in society today. Known to be 'feisty' and openly speaks her mind and come be aggressive at times. Holds the reputation of being a 'Mitchell'.
Chrissie Watts - Kills her husband showing shes in charge. She also buried him under the pub to show that she's strong and deranged.
Kat Slater - Is the popular independent women on the square. She appears very confident and seems to be the centre of things.
Pat Evans - domineering and known to be in fights.
I've chose these women at random as a case study. It's true that to make a successful soap a common convention is to show strong women, as the majority of viewers are middle aged women. Most of the female cast are not shown to be vulnerable, timid or insecure which is not a realistic representation as recent statistics show 1 in 6 women have been raped or 'taken advantage' of. So soaps house this element of realism but in the wrong context as, not every women clearly speaks her mind. It's a known social issue that communication is lacking in relationships (partners, families etc) so therefore all the confrontations that arise involving these women and other characters are false representations of realism.
'Little Mo' was one character that was shown to vulnerable and insecure and generally quite weak. She's stood out like a 'sore thumb' in comparisons to the other characters at the time. It just seems that now there's no real balanced representation. Stacey's Mum was another 'weak' female character and when she was first introduced (due to a big enigmatic build) she seemed in quite a sever statement yet her recovery procedure was not involved in a main storyline, possibly due to the taboo subject of mental health.
So we're following this trend as a female will be in control of the organisation and therefore being shown dominating and in power. We'll develop this idea and show her at a more vulnerable stage to have a fully established and realistic characterisation.

TV listings. front cover magazine. Research

Borders are around images and titles. It helps to create an eye catching appeal. The fonts very bold and would probably be apart of the house style. The images seem very stylised, it's noted that the characters shown have been air brush and they have all been taken photo shoots to ensure they look their best to win over the younger more impressionable viewers. As you can tell every one's smiling and it's made to look as friendly as possible (notice how it shows so much realism with it's all white, blue eyed characterise). The main title, 'Secret lovers!' is obviously revolving around a lustful affair (selling sex and good looks). There's sub-titles that are highlighted with capital letters/highlighted/larger font/colour change/font change. There's no continuation of font standards, this can become quite scrambled for the viewer if they're looking for something to read. It seems audiences for this magazine would instantly recognise it by it's house themes, clearly displayed and presented title. The colours used are very conflicting, the bright turquoise and pink aren't particularly themed and would heighten the contexts on the page. This conflict is also seen in the mixed messages it's portraying to viewers. It's very glamorised with wedding gowns and pretty blonde's although it's mentioning story lines of kidnap and conviction. It's sending out more than one message and this could be to get as many potential readers as possible.

Freefall. new BBC drama.
The characters in the drama appear to be very delusion, within the dynamics of the relations between the characters they tell each other what the other wishes to hear. This has an essence of realism in an ironic fashion as people today would rather wish everything is okay and things will get better with time. This is an optimistic point of view but the characters show no drive to work harder to create better lives for themselves therefore just dreaming about what may happen, not what will.
Dominic Savage writes and directs the sort of TV drama (Out of Control, Born Equal) that traditionally attracts the adjective “gritty”. Perhaps for this reason, his work generally appeals to critics, who always appreciate a break from their usual bland diet of adultery and murder. Here at last, the argument runs, is somebody willing to tackle big issues – and to make television that comes palpably from the heart.
Yet, while both of these things are true, that does’t necessarily make the results as brilliant as his champions claim. In last night’s Freefall (BBC Two), Savage took on the credit crunch. Once again, his heartfelt approach was on full display – but so was its most obvious downside: a complete lack of subtlety.
This is a short extract from a review of Freefall. I believe this director has a similar intention to what we would like to do as a group. Freefall not only bases itself within an office environment centralising around the recession and how it truly effects real people. It's said to be done more subtly and i think as we're producing a soap and not a drama it will house the perfect blend of reality.
It turned out, too, that Dave had some serious competition in the greedy-villain stakes. In the City of London, banker Gus (Aidan Gillen) was so excited by closing another deal that he went to the toilets to masturbate. Over lunch with his teenage daughter, his utter obsession with money meant that he gave her (and us) a handy explanation of mortgage collateralised debt obligations.
In the meantime Dave was chasing his biggest-baddie crown even harder than before. His old school-friend Jim (Joseph Mawle) had already been established as the very definition of “poor but happy”, joshing away with his loving family in their rented council house. Even so, Dave persuaded him to take out a discounted mortgage, without explaining how much the repayments would increase in the second year.
It's shocking how much this drama resembles our initial ideas. The boss who's money greedy with a disturbing focus on success. Obviously we shalln't involve such crude and controversial story lines as it's too pessimistic and too forceful to appeal to a larger audience.
The character of our caretaker was to be defined as 'poor but happy' although, we weren't going to make him vulnerable to deception but more as a friendly companion to the workers within the organisation.
We should research deeper into some of their story lines to give us a good stimulus for ideas.
ADD/ADHD. Research.
It has been estimated that about eight million adults have ADHD in the United States.[31] Untreated adults with ADHD often have chaotic lifestyles, may appear to be disorganized and may rely on non-prescribed drugs and alcohol to get by.[32] They often have such associated psychiatric comorbidities as depression, anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, substance abuse, or a learning disability.[32] A diagnosis of ADHD may offer adults insight into their behaviors and allow patients to become more aware and seek help with coping and treatment strategies.[31] There is controversy amongst some experts on whether ADHD persists into adulthood. Recognized as occurring in adults in 1978, it is currently not addressed separately from ADHD in childhood. Obstacles that clinicians face when assessing adults who may have ADHD include developmentally inappropriate diagnostic criteria, age-related changes, comorbidities and the possibility that high intelligence or situational factors can mask ADHD
- could represent him to be a ‘bimbo’. It’s likely that the sexy women in programmes have a rather low IQ, we can reverse the roles and possible have the man to be stupid.

The hunter vs. farmer theory is a hypothesis proposed by author Thom Hartmann about the origins of ADHD. The theory proposes that hyperactivity may be an adaptive behavior in pre modern humans.[48] And that those with ADHD retain some of the older "hunter" characteristics associated with early pre-agricultural human society. According to this theory, individuals with ADHD may be more adept at searching and seeking and less adept at staying put and managing complex tasks over time.[49] Further evidence showing hyperactivity may be evolutionarily beneficial was put forth in 2006 in a study which found it may carry specific benefits for a society.[50]
- Could play a recording of a lion roar to show the implications of this theory that it’s of more savage, less advanced human attribute taken from the history of humans
[edit] Diet
Main article: Diet and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
A study[60] conducted by researchers at Southampton University in the United Kingdom and published in The Lancet on November 3, 2007 found a definitive link between children’s ingestion of many commonly used artificial food colors, the preservative sodium benzoate and hyperactivity. In response to these findings, the British government took prompt action. According to the Food Standards Agency, the food regulatory agency in the UK, food manufacturers are being encouraged to voluntarily phase out the use of most artificial food colors by the end of 2009. Following the FSA’s actions, the European Commission ruled that any food products containing the “Southampton Six” must display warning labels on their packaging by 2010. In the US, little has been done to curb food manufacturer’s use of artificial food colors, despite the new evidence presented by the Southampton study. However, the existing US Food Drug and Cosmetic Act[61] had already required that artificial food colors be approved for use, that they must be given given FD&C numbers by the FDA, and the use of these colors must be indicated on the package[62]. This is why food packaging in the USA may state something to the effect of: "Contains FD&C Red
- Perhaps ‘PA’ can quote this to ‘sexy man’ in a short scene.
According to the low arousal theory, people with ADHD need excessive activity as self-stimulation because of their state of abnormally low arousal.[73][74] The theory states that those with ADHD cannot self-moderate, and their attention can only be gained by means of environmental stimuli,[73] which in turn results in disruption of attentional capacity and an increase in hyperactive behaviour.
Without enough stimulation coming from the environment, an ADHD child will create it him or herself by walking around, fidgeting, talking, etc. This theory also explains why stimulant medications have high success rates and can induce a calming effect at therapeutic dosages among children with ADHD. It establishes a strong link with scientific data that ADHD is connected to abnormalities with the neurochemical dopamine and a powerful link with low-stimulation PET scan results in ADHD subjects.
- The boss can find ways to control him so he’s constantly working, he can follow directions very well. When he’s seen fidgeting before he’s behaviour gets too out of hand another member of staff can demand a favour even if it’s of no priority or significance, just so he’s always got something to do.
All this research was taken from wikipedia (if your interested in further reading).

our Characters so far.
1. Boss - A women in charge, can be very dominant in the working environment and has tendencies to be a complete control freak. Normally someone in her position would often get very stressed, she's no different, she also has a few sneaky cigarettes when things get too much for her, these are hidden in her desk drawer. She also murmurs to herself prayers when things get tense, some people may mistake this for curses. She wears a headscarf as it shows she's spiritual although her mother who may feature from time to time won't. She's money greedy and is motivated by proving everyone wrong (including her childhood bullies). She has very small moments in the soap where she lets her guard down and shows her vulnerable side (this is only ever done to her PA). She is also a hypercondriact.
Bosses PA – a ‘normal’ man who has a wife and children at home. He’s an ambiguous character who may appear shady at times but this is due to recent gay feelings which he keeps very secretive from everyone. Although at times he lets on to the Boss as they have a very complex and trustworthy relationship. He acts as an ‘agony aunt’ to the boss when she gets too stressed. He appears bossy and arrogant towards other staff lower down the hierarchy to him, he’s known as a misfit to other workers and often gets teased by other employees (he’s made solitary). He’s a very good listener, well educated and is known as a health freak as he constantly reminds the others of their unhealthy lifestyles.
New girl – She’s been given a recent work placement in the office for 3 months as she’s studying fashion/business at university. She’s young, flirtatious and attractive. She’s gay and single and gets a lot of attention from the male staff. She gets very bored and attention seeking when there’s not much going on in the offices. She appears very helpful at first to make a good impression. She has many ambitions dreams to save the world and begins preaching that sweatshops are wrong and that there’s not enough recycling going on. She mirrors the audience as she too is new to the scene.
Production manager/sexy man – Tall dark and handsome (following the conventions of tv programmes). He’s a regular man with an eccentric laugh. He also has a mental disorder known as ADHD/ADD which summarises a lot of his characteristics. He gets prescribed medication for this.
Care taker – He’s a very intelligent man who is not highly rank in the organisation but is very well respected by most. He helps with the accounts as he’s a very good mathematician. He’s very humble, genuinely happy and smokes marijuana. He was previously prescribed marijuana as he suffered from anxiety issues therefore not being able to be employed by a professional organisation but as the boss as a sensitive side she was charmed by him.
Homeless man in the car park – very quiet man who spends his days outside the building as he’s very found of the workers. He recently lost everything due to the recession. He was already very lower class but the council refused him a home and is bound to the streets for several months. He’s able to use the shower in the warehouse and occasionally gets jobs unloading stock. He’s very wise and keeps the smokers company either with his guitar or general wisdom.

Eastenders review.
I agree with this person. I'd come up with a few ideas that we may include in our story lines for example; happy people, a person that enjoys laughing and has a good spirit. Possibly a perfectly normal gay person, not one that as issues about coming out, not one that is struggling to admit their sexually but someone living comfortably with their sexuality. A cannabis user who doesn't have underlying mental issues or abuses the substance but someone who may be prescribed marijuana as a medication and functions normally within society.
These are ideas that go against the normal forms of these archetypes shown, people may be interested to see different dynamics to characters. Going with what the above review mentioned that the literacy and mathematics skills of the whole population in the UK is very low, there may be a market for more intellectual viewers. We discussed as a group that our soap may show on the BBC2 as they have more business minded and sophisticated programmes such as Dragon's Den. This is also challenging the conventions of traditional soaps structure.

The Office.
-First thing i noticed was that is a very good balance of absurdity and realism. The mise-en-scene seems very believable yet storylines and characters are very far fetched.
-It follows the stereotype that an office is a mans place as its predominantly men, a women is shown as a receptionist.
-All the men are wearing suits, which is the normal attire of an an office.the colours are not flamboyant in any sense.
--For our soap maybe we could push the boundries and show eccentric characters, men could possibly wear brighter colours to highlight the individuality (not all men of course).
-The office does not focus it's priorities in showing realism. It goes on 'funny' sterotypes or assumptions. The office has a 90% white male class, this is something i don't want to follow if were basing it around an office enviroment.
--We can take the eccentricity of Shameless characters and place them in a boring/normal/realistic office enviroment similar to The Office.
-The office's present are not particularly big, you would assume the business is not a multi million organisation but rather an average sized organisation. Its successful with it's mise-en-scene as it has metal cabinets, water dispensers chairs aligned by the side of halls and dull colour schemes throughout.
- The office seems to be very tidy and clean, it doesn't show an working enviroment. People watching the show would not pay much attention on the details but when you focus on them you can see that it is only a set. We would obviously show stray papers and sentimental ornaments on employees desk.
- They employees go out to a club after work. The style is of course very different to how we'd like to do it. Everything is very comical so situations and circumstances are heightened to create humour. We'd like to include humourous elements in the soap but this will be subtly through dialogue or gestures, this so we can keep a relatable, realistic essence of the programme.
- There's a brief scene of a character in the car travelling to work. This came up in part of brainstorm and it's assuring to know we're on the right tracks. We can take some elements of the Office but addapt it to fit a soap style.
This image shows a fair ratio of men to women. But when watching the programme only one women was seen to be involved in any of the sketches/storylines.
